about

While on the scrounge for some strange and mysterious event to pique my interest to write, starting at the public library, I came across a book of shipwrecks and offshore sightings (the book smelt old, had book repair tape all over it, so I just KNEW it had to have something spooky in it).
I came across the story of a boat called the Mary Celeste. A ship plagued with misfortune from it's creation in 1861 (the captain died nine days into it's maiden voyage), through to it being found abandoned, middle of the ocean, in 1872, and then purposefully wrecked for an insurance fraud attempt by it's last owner/captain in 1885.
Well worth the read of it's wiki page, but be sure to check out Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale "The Captain Of The Pole-Star", which features the first use of the name 'Marie Celeste' to which the Mary Celeste is fictionally referred to.
Gave me a chance to write something of a sea shanty!

lyrics

On the horizon of the dancing sea
An abandoned ship seen through the haze
A ship that has seen better days
Waves whisper a name in the breeze
And heed a warning if you step on board
You won't go back to shore

Where are all the crew
What drove them to the sea
There's six months worth of food
And cargo for delivery
The binnacle is untampered
And mainsail's blowing strong
But the wardrooms are empty
There's no trace of what went wrong

Faintly in the distance
Land approaches in the view
Miles from nowhere and
Uncharted hitherto
Then comes the song
Sung so softly and so sweet
But it's the Sirens calling for us
Swap lethargy for retreat

Marie Celeste
Marie Celeste
What you've found on your quest
Marie Celeste
Marie Celeste
Speculation can't match
All you have suppressed

A dire aroma
Starts to seep up from below
And then an explosion adds
To this fearful tableau
The ocean starts to roar
Like the planets opening wide
The ship it bends, it twists, it splits
As different worlds collide

This ship is bent on cursing
Everyone that steps on board
Roaming the oceans
Never finding any shores
Something shouts: "exterminate",
Clouds culminate in the sky
As fog surrounds the ship
To claim more victims in it's reprise

Marie Celeste
Marie Celeste
What you've found on your quest
Marie Celeste
Marie Celeste
Speculation can't match
All you have suppressed

I find it futile to try and snap out of my nihilism, so instead I distract myself with small fictions set to fast music.
